I recently had the privilege of attending an inspiring fundraising event at Adelaide Oval - made even more meaningful by being held at the venue named in honour of Australian cricket legend Karen Rolton. As a former national captain and one of the greatest batters in the history of women’s cricket, Karen’s legacy of leadership, determination, and excellence set the perfect tone for this special occasion.
The event focused on supporting women’s cricket pathways and advancing women’s economic empowerment in Timor Leste, bringing together passionate advocates and leaders from across the sporting and international development communities.
It was wonderful to meet the remarkable Jenny Thompson from Her World Cricket Tour, whose dedication is helping create genuine sporting opportunities for women and girls in developing countries. Her work is expanding the reach of cricket while breaking down social and economic barriers for young women across the Asia-Pacific region.

I was also honoured to meet Ana Joaquim Pedruco, Adviser on Women’s Empowerment to President José Ramos-Horta and Mariana Dias Ximenes, Timor Leste’s first Olympian and Board Member of Cricket Timor Leste
Both shared powerful reflections on the role of sport in nation-building, confidence-building, and supporting women’s long‑term participation in education and the workforce. Their vision and commitment were truly inspiring.
This event highlighted the power of sport to empower communities, connect nations, and uplift the next generation of women leaders. I am grateful to all involved for their ongoing efforts to create pathways of opportunity for women in Timor Leste and beyond.
